What to Write About
The freelance writing world is full of people who know what they want to write about. Even you may have decided what you want to write about - whether it is something you already know or are interested in.
Write a list of five things that you want to write about.
Now make a list of five things that you don’t want to write about.
Now write (research if you have to) 1,000 words on one of the subjects you don’t want to write about. The thing to realize here is if you want to make a living as a freelance writer, you need to be flexible to the needs of the editors you may be working for. They probably have way too many people who want to write articles about the same things you want to write about. On the other hand, they may not have enough writers to write about the topics you don’t want to write about.
You will get more work and repeat work from an editor when you express to them that you are willing to write about whatever they have a need for.

Good advice. If I only wrote about things I wanted to write about, I’d never be able to make a living as a freelance writer. As it is, I write about erosion control, waste management, mortgage loans and ways in which communities control storm waters. None of these are topics I dreamed about covering when I started as a freelance writer more than 15 years ago. But, as you say, sometimes it’s the topics that aren’t “hot” that help get writers into the good graces of editors.
